Wegner's Round Chair, known simply as The Chair after it appeared on the Kennedy-Nixon debate stage in 1960, exemplifies the workshop's standards. Its compound-curved backrest is steam-bent from a single piece of wood, requiring selection of timber with absolutely flawless grain and applying heat and pressure with millimetre precision.
Sanding and finishing consume nearly as much time as construction. Surfaces pass through progressively finer grits until they feel like polished stone, then receive a soap finish that penetrates the wood's pores rather than sitting on the surface. This treatment allows the wood to breathe and develop a lustre that deepens with use.
