The Brush Maker Whose Bristles Come from a Single Province in China

G.B. Kent and Sons, London's oldest brush maker, has sourced its finest hog bristle from Sichuan province in China for over two centuries. The company, founded in 1777, uses this specific bristle because the climate and diet of Sichuan's free-range hogs produce fibre longer, stiffer, and more naturally flagged than bristle from any other region.

Hog bristle is unique among natural fibres because of its flagged tips. Under magnification, each bristle splits into multiple fine filaments creating a natural brush terminus that holds and distributes paint or polish more evenly than any synthetic alternative. This property combined with natural taper and resilience makes it irreplaceable.

Sichuan bristle owes its quality to cold winters and the hogs' outdoor lifestyle. The harsh climate stimulates thicker, denser growth, while diverse foraging provides keratin nutrition for strong fibre development. Bristle from warmer regions or intensively farmed animals tends to be thinner and less resilient.

Processing begins at source. Bristle is sorted by length, colour, and stiffness in Chinese dressing houses before export. The longest bristles, over one hundred millimetres, command highest prices for premium brushes. Sorting is done by hand, by workers assessing quality by touch in fractions of a second.

The supply chain faces increasing pressure. Chinese hog farming is moving toward intensive indoor operations producing inferior bristle, and skilled dressers in Sichuan are shrinking as younger workers migrate to cities. Kent maintains long-term relationships with traditional farms to secure continued access.

The supply chain faces increasing pressure from multiple directions. Chinese hog farming is moving toward intensive indoor operations producing markedly inferior bristle, and the pool of skilled bristle dressers in Sichuan is shrinking steadily as younger workers migrate to cities for higher-paying employment.
