The Saddlestitch Binder Whose Client List Reads Like a Library Catalogue

At the Ludlow Bookbinders workshop in Shropshire, master binder Kate Holland produces saddle-stitched pamphlets and limited-edition publications for clients including the Bodleian Library, the Royal Academy of Arts, and the National Trust. Her specialty is the simplest form of bookbinding, yet one demanding absolute precision.

Saddle stitching, sewing through the spine fold, has been used since the fifteenth century for ephemeral publications. Unlike perfect binding, saddle stitching allows the booklet to open completely flat, making it ideal for catalogues and any publication where the spread across two pages must be uninterrupted.

The sewing uses linen thread waxed for grip and a curved needle passing through pre-punched holes. Holland typically uses three or five sewing stations depending on the booklet's height. The tension must be consistent: too tight and the spine puckers, too loose and the pages shift during handling.

Paper selection is critical because the binding method imposes unique demands. The outer pages must travel a longer path around the spine than inner pages, a phenomenon called creep. Holland compensates by trimming after sewing, but the paper must tolerate this operation cleanly.

The digital publishing revolution has, somewhat paradoxically, increased demand for high-quality physical publications. Institutions that once printed mass-run catalogues now commission smaller editions of substantially higher quality, recognising that a beautifully made booklet creates a lasting impression and emotional connection that a digital PDF download simply cannot match.

When commissioning printed publications for lasting impact, consider saddle stitching for projects of up to approximately eighty pages. Specify hand sewing over machine stapling for the finest possible results, and discuss paper and cover options with your binder well before the graphic design is finalised.
