The geology comes first and is unforgiving. Sedimentary stone has a bed, the plane on which it was laid down, and a block must be set in the building the way it lay in the quarry. Face-bedded stone, turned so the laminations run vertically, sheds its surface in flakes at the first hard frost, and a great deal of Victorian repair work is failing now for exactly this reason. On a carved block the orientation is decided before a single line is drawn.

The carver begins with a maquette, a small-scale model in clay or plaster establishing the design's proportions. This model is then scaled up using a pointing machine or three-dimensional scanning. But the final surface is always carved by hand, because the chisel's interaction with stone produces a quality no machine can replicate.

Tool marks are a language. A point roughs out the mass; a claw chisel, its edge cut into teeth, removes waste in parallel ridges that survive on unfinished medieval work and let you read the sequence; flat chisels and bullnoses bring the surface to its finish. The carver also works to a viewing distance, so a capital read from twenty metres below is undercut deeply and simplified, which is why cathedral foliage often looks coarse from a scaffold and correct from the nave floor.

Verity's method involves prolonged contemplation of each stone block before the first cut. He studies the block's natural colour variation, fossil inclusions, and bedding planes, incorporating these features into the design rather than fighting them. A fossil might become an angel's eye; a colour change might define the boundary between earth and sky.

Conservation has moved in the same direction as carving, towards less intervention and more patience. Abrasive blasting and acid washes, standard through the mid-twentieth century, strip the case-hardened surface of limestone and accelerate decay, where current practice uses poultices and low-pressure nebulous water applied over hours or days. Training has been rebuilt to match, and Britain's Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowship now runs a foundation degree in stonemasonry taught through cathedral works departments, so apprentices learn on the buildings they will spend their careers repairing.
