How One Tannery in Tuscany Serves Three Hundred Fashion Houses

Conceria Walpier, located in the Santa Croce sull'Arno district of Tuscany, supplies vegetable-tanned leather to over three hundred fashion houses and bespoke workshops worldwide. From its facility on the banks of the Arno, this family-run tannery processes approximately four hundred hides per day, each destined for a brand whose reputation depends on material quality.

The Santa Croce district is home to roughly two hundred tanneries concentrated within a few square kilometres, the densest cluster of leather production in the world. This geographical concentration creates an ecosystem of specialist suppliers, chemical companies, and skilled workers that no individual tannery could sustain alone.

Walpier specialises in calf and goat skins tanned with chestnut and mimosa extracts, producing leather distinguished by firm hand, warm colour, and capacity for deep burnishing. The hides undergo a six-week process including soaking, liming, deliming, pickling, and gradual immersion in tannin baths.

The hides undergo a rigorous six-week process including soaking, liming, deliming, pickling, and gradual immersion in progressively stronger tannin baths.

Environmental management has become central to operations. Walpier operates a closed-loop water treatment system recycling eighty percent of process water, and spent tannin liquors are concentrated for use as agricultural soil conditioners. The shared Consorzio Depuratore handles effluent from the district's tanneries collectively.
